Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has expressed optimism about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to create a more equitable world. In his 2024 forecast, Gates highlighted the transformative power of AI in narrowing the gap between rich and poor regions.
The billionaire philanthropist emphasized the importance of timely and strategic investments in AI technology. He believes that such investments can significantly reduce the time it takes for innovations to reach both affluent and economically challenged parts of the world.
Gates drew parallels between the current stage of AI development and the early era of the Internet. He recalled the substantial time lag in the adoption of new technology between high-income and low-income countries. To address this issue, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is actively supporting innovative initiatives to bridge the gap.
“If I were to make a prediction, I would estimate that high-income countries like the U.S. are on track to witness a notable level of AI utilization by the general population within the next 18-24 months. Similarly, I anticipate a comparable level of adoption in African countries in approximately three years,” stated Gates.
